The practical stuff, explained simply, so you can arrive in Tanzania feeling prepared and excited.
June to October is the classic dry season — animals gather at water and the bush is easier to see into. January to March is magical in the southern Serengeti, with thousands of newborn wildebeest. For Kilimanjaro, we love January–March and June–October.
Most visitors need a tourist visa. You can apply online before you travel or get one on arrival at Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar airports. Check the current visa fee with the Tanzanian immigration authority, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your entry date.
A yellow fever certificate is only needed if you're arriving from an endemic country. We do strongly recommend malaria prophylaxis and comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, which is required for all our trips.
Fly into Kilimanjaro International (JRO) for northern safaris and treks, Julius Nyerere (DAR) for the southern parks, or Abeid Amani Karume (ZNZ) for Zanzibar. Whichever you choose, we'll be there to meet you.
The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted. Cards work in towns, but bring cash for park fees, souvenirs and tips. Ask us for current tipping guidance before you travel.
Think neutral layers, a wide-brim hat, binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent and a soft duffel bag for light aircraft. Once you book, we send you a full kit list — and if you're climbing Kilimanjaro, gear rental is easy to arrange in Moshi.
